Many people are currently struggling to pay their bills, are unsure of the economy and for many, even if they’ll have a job to go to in the coming months or years. It’s really important to recognise that you’re not alone, and that there are steps you can take to ensure your success as an employee, and even better – *BE REWARDED BY GETTING A PAY RISE OR A PROMOTION*.
For years I’ve been associated with management roles in one way shape or form. Through the years I’ve had a learning disposition to soak up as much knowledge from my mentors and peers on all things relating to business. That helped me climb the corporate ladder and eventually run a successful, awarded multi-million dollar business. I want to share those lessons with all of you to see you succeed and enjoy the satisfaction of regular pay rises and promotions.
Through my experience I faced a lot of resistance and had to overcome my own personal limitations, along with learning the corporate environment. There are many lessons to learn and each company has its own dynamic infrastructure made up of the most complex equipment available – people.
My father died too young (aged 58) and after he died my mother asked if I would like to take some of his business books. One of the books I reviewed had some yellow highlight throughout several chapters. One particular highlighted passage has remained with me ever since. It read “no matter how many management reports are written, no matter how many times you review the numbers in the business, the one thing remains – business is all about people”.
It’s that very reason this web site was created. I’ve found my passion in business isn’t related to the successes I’ve seen, or the position that comes with a title. It’s really all about the people. I think it’s fantastic to see staff that I have mentored go on to achieve greater things. To see people grow, both personally and professionally and to know that in a small way, I’ve played a part. That’s what gives me the most satisfaction.
As I have now ventured out and created a new business, I’ve reflected on those values that I most highly regard and the one that continually comes to me is the effect an individual can have on people’s lives. So I started reflecting and thinking, what can I can impart to others that would actually make a real difference in their lives? What would be meaningful enough to write about?
Then it all fell into place after a phone call. An ex-employee wanted to use me as a reference and spoke to me about a new opportunity they were considering. Obviously salary came up and through our discussion I was recommending strategies as to how they could negotiate the salary they believed was right for them.
Ding!
That’s it right? How to negotiate a salary! Well that’s easy, lets see….
Then as I started to think of the many salary reviews and negotiations I’d had with numerous staff I realised, this is far more complicated than telling someone to enter the room in a professional manner and with a nice smile declare they would like to have a discussion about their future. Asking for a pay rise and being rejected is horrible. Not only do you walk away totally deflated, but you also normally walk away knowing you’re now stuck on your current salary for an extended period of time. Getting this step right is really important.
It’s just not always as simple as walking in and asking for a raise! Why you ask? Because people are complex. There is a history of work that has been created between you as an employee and the company you’re working for. That history has to be reflected upon, then small adjustments made before you can be fully confident you tick all the pay rise criteria.
That’s when I began to really review what it would take to successfully negotiate a pay rise. And this web site will provide a number of guides from outstanding leaders and mentors to give you practical steps you can follow which will give you the best possible chance to walk in and ask for a pay rise, and have the most success in receiving your request.
To your continued path of success, pay rises and promotions!
